I was walking out of the grocery store last night – when from across the parking lot this guy yells – “Hey man – Got some good music for sale here. You wanna buy some CDs?”
My first thought was…
“what’s a CD?”
Then when I remembered – I thought…
“who listens to CD anymore?”
Finally – I told him I was all set for Hip Hop…and come to find out – a random dude in a parking lot might be the only way to get a CD after July 1st, 2018 because Best Buy announced yesterday they are no longer going to sell CDs.
That made me think of all the cash I dropped there on CDs back in the day. SO many memories of going to Best Buy and shelling out $18.99 to buy CD’s that I may be a little embarrassed by now. (ahem – Joe Diffy – Lone Star – Diamond Rio)
But I remember the first piece of music I ever bought with my own “lawn mowing” money. It was Alabama’s Mountain Music Album. I listen to that cassette until it wore out.
Looking back on all the ways we used to listen to music – makes you think, “we’ve come a long way, baby.”
As far back as I can remember there was vinyl. After that came the 8-Track. Followed by the cassette. Everyone was blown away by CDs. There was the short lived mini-disc. Now we’re all listening to mp3s.
What was the first piece of music you ever bought with your own money?
Oh – and don’t worry – Best Buy says they’ll continue making vinyl.
