So we all know that dust around the house can make you get the sniffles, sneeze and generally get frustrated. Its no secret to any of my friends and family that I am no “Susie Homemaker” when it comes to cleaning my place, but I’m no slouch either.
When I came across an article recently from Duke University I about fell out of my chair! Get this, researchers collected samples of dust from 11 homes in North Carolina. Then they placed the samples alongside a mouse cell model known as 3T3-LI, which is used to test the development of fat cells, or triglycerides. Seven of the dust samples triggered the cells to mature into fat cells. Wait…what!?!?!
Extracts from nine of the dust samples caused the cells to divide, creating a larger pool of precursor fat cells. Ultimately, this happens because the dust contains endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) which can interfere with the body’s hormones. Since dust can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the skin, researchers warn that even minimal exposure could cause measurable effects. Are they saying that dust can make you FAT!?!
In other words, the reason I have a “sturdy gate” (as my dad would say!!) is because I’m not a good housekeeper!?!?
Greeeeeeat!
I gotta go get some cleaning supplies, talk to ya guys later!
