When I was a kid, I had A LOT of fears, but one that has always stuck out was the time my mom (AKA “The Bean”) told me to NEVER push the button on the gear shift in cars. She has this dramatic way about her anyway, (Which made for GREAT story telling!) so when she told me that, I was certain that if someone ever pushed that button, we would all die a horrible death.
Fast forward to when that little kid was learning how to drive! My mom is going through the motions of teaching me one day in an empty parking lot, and she gets to the part where she tells me how to get the car in drive. She says ‘now you have to push that button and pull the shift back one click’. THE LOOK I SHOT HER…….I said mom I can’t push that button!! She looked at my quizzically and asked me why. I said “you always told me if I ever push that button something really bad will happen!” I have never seen that woman laugh so hard in my life. Needless to say, it was an irrational fear I had for many years. My little brother always thought sharks would swim up from the toilet and bite his bum…so there’s that!
What were you irrationally afraid of as a kid?
