The Olympics are on and we are glued to the television every night to see how our home grown athletes are doing in Pyeongchang. My wife (aka: The Princess) is a former figure skater so we watch ALL the skaters do their thang. We watch the short programs – the free skates – the ice dancing – pairs – individuals – all of it.
Last week during the team competition we saw a French figure skater perform her routine wearing – wait for it….wait for it…
PANTS!
It was actually a skin tight body suit – but still…it was soooooo different.
This made me wonder why more female skaters don’t follow suit. Not wearing a skirt maybe seen as taboo. It could be considered the equivalent of a woman wearing a suit and tie or tuxedo.
I’m also curious why figure skating is the only Olympic event that doesn’t require a uniform. Even individual sports like skiing, speed skating and snowboarding wear matching gear – shouldn’t figure skating do the same?
If they all had the same kit on – perhaps judges could focus solely on the skaters’ skills and not their elaborate outfits.
