Do you know what is hiding in your child’s Halloween costume? Hopefully not lice! I love taking my kids to try on Halloween costumes. But if you stop and think about it…how many other people have also tried on those masks and wigs? I try to go as soon as the stores put out Halloween gear one, because I’m a Halloween freak! Two, my theory is those costumes haven’t been man handled as much as those left at the bottom of the bargain bin the day before Halloween. This is a great article on reminding parents that lice could be transferred easily to your child or you! Simply by putting on a wig or mask that may have critters hiding inside of it. And yes, I just noticed I’m starting to itch as I write this story! The thought of lice in my Halloween costume is enough to make my skin crawl!
Here are some great tips suggested by WTOL News in Toledo
- Put your costume or wig in a sealed plastic bag for 48 hours before wearing it. Any head lice will die within 24-48 hours.
- Throw dryer friendly items in the dryer on high heat for 45 minutes before wearing them.
- Wear a swim or wig cap to cover yours or your child’s hair to create a barrier that will be tough for lice to cross.
